Identity Authentication Using ID Verifier (Passport Reader)

Updated

ID Verifier (Passport Reader) is a high-assurance authentication method available through Verified Secure. It allows signers to prove their identity by scanning the biometric NFC chip inside their physical passport or national ID card using a smartphone.

This provides a secure, digital identity validation method for international signers who do not have access to regional electronic IDs (such as BankID, MitID, or FTN).

👥 Who Is This Relevant For?

  • Cross-Border Transactions: Organizations dealing with international clients, expatriates, or foreign signatories located outside the Nordic and EU eID ecosystems.

  • High-Compliance Workflows: Senders who require bank-grade identity verification before granting access to sensitive or legally sensitive documents.

⚙️ How It Works

The authentication process links the web signing flow with a quick mobile passport scan:

1. Sender Configuration

  • When creating an envelope in the Verified web app or via API, choose ID Verifier as the required authentication method.

  • Enter the recipient's name and personal identification number (if applicable to their country).

  • Publish and dispatch the envelope.

2. Recipient Verification Flow

  1. Open Invitation: The recipient opens their signing link and lands on the secure ID Verifier gate screen.

  2. Launch Mobile App: The screen guides the recipient to install or open the ID Verifier companion app on their mobile device (iOS or Android).

  3. Scan Document & NFC Chip:

    • The recipient scans the machine-readable zone (MRZ) on their passport using their phone's camera.

    • They hold the phone against the passport or national ID card to read the cryptographic biometric chip via Near-Field Communication (NFC).

  4. Instant Unlock: Once the identity data is validated against the official cryptographic signature in the chip, the recipient is instantly cleared to open, review, and sign the documents.

📲 Recipient Requirements

To complete authentication via ID Verifier, the recipient needs:

  • A valid Biometric Passport (e-Passport) or National e-ID Card featuring the standard biometric chip symbol.

  • A smartphone equipped with an NFC reader (standard on modern iPhones and Android devices).

  • The free ID Verifier companion app installed on their phone.
