BankID Error: BID-18a8d (Could Not Store Document)
If you see the error code BID-18a8d, it means the PDF document you are attempting to sign is too large for the Norwegian BankID (BankID NO) system to handle.
Why Did This Error Occur?
BankID Norway enforces strict technical constraints on electronic document processing:
The Absolute Limit: BankID NO explicitly states that a single document must not exceed 3 MB. If your file is larger than this, the BankID network will automatically reject it and trigger the "Could not store document" error.
The Platform Variance: While the standard Verified platform can accept uploads up to 10 MB, regional identity networks like BankID NO enforce their own lower, mandatory limits.
How to Fix It
To resolve the error and successfully sign your document, you need to decrease the file size using one of the following methods:
Method 1: Compress the PDF
Run your file through a PDF optimization tool (such as Adobe Acrobat's "Reduce File Size" option or an online PDF compressor) to shrink its data footprint without losing text quality.
Method 2: Split the Document
If the PDF contains a large number of pages or heavy attachments, split the single file into multiple smaller documents before launching a new signing transaction.
📱 Optimizing for Mobile Users
Even if a document is just under the 3 MB limit, large files heavily degrade the signing experience for your clients:
Over 50% of recipients open their signing invitations and review files directly on mobile devices.
Older smartphones and tablets frequently run out of memory or freeze when trying to render heavy, unoptimized PDFs inside a mobile web browser.
Our Recommendation: Aim to keep individual document file sizes under 1 MB. Smaller file sizes guarantee a significantly faster, smoother, and error-free signing journey.
